The Book Thief

By Markus Zusak

Liesel Meminger’s life is one that is filled with hardships all around. Living in Germany during World War II, she and her brother are given up for adoption by her mother. But before they reach the foster home her brother dies. At his funeral she finds a book on the ground and steals it, even though she is illiterate. Soon she arrives at her foster parents Hans and Rosa Hubermann’s house. As she leads her life in her new environment, she learns the value of friendship, love, and literature. But at the same time she learns of the harshness, brutality, guilt, and death that surround humanity.

  1. This book is more appealing to people with an interest in historical fiction and tragedy. It twists the mind and is hard to keep up with if you aren't into that genre.

  2. this book isn't really as much about history as about a young girl's reaction to the confusing events taking place around her, and their toll on everyone she knows. it was a beautifully written book that told more about "beauty and brutality" than any other book i'd read before.
